This project responds to two major challenges on two different timescales: one, to provide user comfort and enhance the quality of the seafront landscape today; the other, to propose reversible developments that accommodate the need to adapt the quay to the risk of being submerged by the sea over the medium and long term.
A wooden walkway was attached to the existing pontoon and runs the length of the quay. It can be dismantled to allow future planned work to be carried out on the riprap as part of the GEMAPI project.#cut
This promenade is bordered by a “bench-dyke”, which separates the public roadway and protects building facades from short-term marine submersion. Dedicated spaces at the ends of the bench allow for cofferdams to be installed during storms. Storm management remains unchanged from current practices, but the bases of the facades will be kept out of the water until the dyke is rebuilt over the longer term. This multi-purpose concrete bench is covered in engravings, turning the promenade into a genuine coastal interpretation trail.
